Fun place to stay and enjoyed the ability to go out during the pandemic.
We loved feeling safe while playing games and meeting others that were following the mandates to help keep businesses open. Win or lose a great place to get out safely and have fun!! We stayed at this property over the weekend Friday, August 14th to Saturday, August 15th. I've never stayed at Grand Casino before and we were planning to travel to Hinkley but decided last minute to stay in the Mille Lacs area.
My husband was hesitant, as he had stayed previously and did not have a great experience; but that was a few years ago. Our 1 priority was to eat dinner, and our 2 priority was to relax in a swimming pool and hot tub, followed possibly by some gambling. We'd had a long week at a fishing tournament and just wanted to relax a bit first. We arrived, and immediately went to the trailer parking we had the boat.
My husband has stayed there previously and knew where it was. We parked, covered the boat and proceeded to the entrance juggling our items for the evening. When we got to the entrance, it was closed and stated we needed to walk around to the main entrance.
It would've been nice to have a heads up prior to parking and unloading our luggage. We got inside only to be told by Security that it's recommended my husband have a mask. Guess what, in all the chaos he dropped his mask and I had to go out to grab it Go walk all the way around the building to search around and then walk all the way around the building again to get in with it. Check-in was great. The woman at the desk had a sign saying she was in-training. I thought she did an excellent job.
We got to our room, which we had no issues with and proceeded to get ready for dinner. The room was about what we were expecting. Not rundown, but nothing fancy. We did like having the fridge in the room. We went to dinner and guess what? Almost every restaurant was closed. That was a very disappointing. He had a place in mind for us to eat and it wasn't open. But we found a place to eat eventually. Our Waiter was wonderful and very attentive.
It was cooked perfect, just had no flavor to it. Drinks and service was great. Headed back to the room and saw the pool on the way. This is one of the main reasons we booked. I looked on your website prior to booking to see specifically that it was open. The website made NO mention of it. Had I known previously or been told at check-in we would have continued onto the Days Inn in Hinkley as was our original plan.
We went to our rooms disappointed in the experience as a whole and wondered about leaving. Had the weather not been awful and we didn't have to walk around the entire building to get there, we would have left. I really think that you should be much more upfront with your guests about what you have open and closed so they know what to expect. Even if it's the front desk notifying them at check-in. It would be much better than the disappointment later.
At least I'd have known what I was paying for and could make an educated decision we'd have chosen to leave because that was the main amenity we wanted. The mask issue within the hotel and casino area was confusing. The Security Guard told my husband it was, "Recommended" however, others told him it was required.
However, many of the employees were wearing them under their chins, etc. I don't really care because we are not mask wearers unless required, but would have been nice to have a clear cut rule if it's recommended or required. Also, I highly suggest when there are tornado warnings you at least let those within the Casino know there is something going on. If they want to continue gambling fine; but was surprised there wasn't even an announcement made and many had no idea what was happening outside.
Date of stay: August Value. Sleep Quality. Room Tip: We were room - kinda cool view of the fountain directly below. Champlin, Minnesota 2, contributions helpful votes. Not much social distancing here but mask rule was enforced! FIrst visit back since casino reopened due to Covid restrictions. Although there were social distancing markings and sign around the hotel, elevator and restaurants there were none on the casino floor!
All machines were open and as far as cleaning was concerned, we saw very few employees wiping down machines. This was on a weekend as well.
